Q: Kernel Issue arises after trying to delete MacKeeper

Hello.  Im so frustrated.  It started trying to use a link to a movie my daughter sent me (yes dumb) as soon as I did this I tried to stop and just exit out but my computer became possessed with MacKeeper and popups and warnings. I felt like I was in a Lost in Space Episode (warning warning).  Then Mackeeper started popping up in another tab anytime I tried too google anything and it kept switching me back to another Search Engine.  I tried fixing thru Safari but soon realized the problem was way worse and went here for help.  Using tips for deleting Malware, I got in the Library as stated and started getting rid of identifiable files. I went thru everything just randomly deleting here and there.  5 hours later I have even worse problems than MacKeeper because when I thought all was Ok I went back to what I had been working on when I wanted to watch the movie 7 hours ago!! And the page would not load.  I was trying to load Go Daddy Website Builder tonight and make a few edits to my sons website.  I have never had any issues loading or buffering or anything before.  Well back to the Boards I went and found that looking at Activity Monitor there was this huge file that Said  Kernel something another and it was hogging all the memory.  I've tried looking to no avail.  I tried doing that boot in the Ctrl R thing where I repaired Disks and Disk permissions and all that but that didn't work.

I tried going out of my User account and into the other user account and the problem does not occur in the other User account on my laptop.  SO since I've learned way more than I ever wanted to know about my Apples innards I am listing below the ETRE report when the computer is running in my User screen and then the ETRE report when it runs on the other User screen.  I compared them and see some items on mine not on his (mostly the files are like these "com.apple.----")

So here are the reports.(I didn't know what Dropbox ppl are uploading to).  Can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix this problem?  This laptop has NEVER had problems like this ever before.  It just zings right along like its supposed to (unless there are a lot of us in the house using the internet)

I don't like the sound of that. It sounds like you found and removed the adware, but I don't know what else you did. There have been a number of debates between users regarding using AdwareMedic to remove adware vs. manually deleting files. I always recommend AdwareMedic because of situations like this.

Unfortunately, I can't help you too much at this point. I don't know what you deleted. Was it necessary? Perhaps. It looks like you partially deleted your "JustCloud" software. You should always use vendor-provided uninstallers or uninstallation instructions. If they don't exist, then follow the consensus from the community. If you don't want the "JustCloud" software, then you must now re-install it and then properly uninstall it.

The kernel task is normal. Don't worry about that.

If you are continuing to have problems with this machine, I suggest reinstalling Mavericks. You can re-run the installer without erasing your hard disk.  Let it run for a couple of days, and then reply if it still has problems and post specific details of the specific problems you are now encountering.

Well the deletion wasn't exactly random.  I was reading other posts regarding malware that said certain files to delete.  I just can imagine what has been deleted.  The Kernel thing is a big deal bc its the main problem that is not letting any large pages load (like the Website Builder site I am on).  It will load on the other User account just not mine so  I guess I can compare the files that are on his Startup/Daemon/Framework etc and see what Im missing.

Thank you for your reply.  I saw some very lengthy replies regarding issues such as this that involve copy paste paste so I guess i will try that now that I am more well-rested  Problems always occur when I get sleepy and should have stopped and I never would have had a problem.

Regarding the reinstall of Mavericks.....does it really take "DAYS" to reinstall?    Is there a post regarding how to do this??

    Thanks.

Also it may be of importance that I went into the Terminal (using a Youtube video) and tried to add some lines that would have permanently redirected any malware to my local computer.  HOWEVER I thought I had done this but when I went back into it after reboot none of the lines I added were there (and I had managed to get rid of the Malware)

But maybe monkeying around in the Terminal did something but it looks exactly the same.

Everything other than this one page appears to load OK today.  Its just strange that this one task Im trying to work on, which I was working on when the problem started, will not load.  It leads me to believe there is a problem and from the looks of Etre it doesn't look right.

    1.   Does anyone know if the "STARTUP" report from Etre is the way it should be?? It is in red and says stuff about 360 which I thought referred to my sons old xbox 360.  And I definitely had tried to get rid of this.

    2.  Is it possible to update the library items from  a Time Machine backup before the problem started?  It occurred yesterday and up til then everything was fine.

    Carefully re-read what etresoft said…

Reinstalling doesn't take days, but you want to use the machine for a few days after reinstalling to be able to see what issues you have.

    To reinstall

Take a full backup before you begin just in case anything breaks - it may not break, but if you have a backup you are less likely to be in a sticky situation in the case of errors or mistakes. Ask if you need advice on backing up (hopefully you are already doing this!).

Make Time Machine create a backup by selecting 'Back up now' from the Time Machine menu.

When reinstalling it is best to connect to the internet via wire (ethernet) if at all possible - the OS installer is around 5GB & can take a long time to download on slow Wifi. Wifi can also drop the connection too preventing installation.

Reboot holding cmd+r. the recovery partition will launch.

Select the option to 'reinstall OS X'

Select your internal OS disk to install onto - DO NOT ERASE THE DISK, quit if any prompts suggest erasing.

This will overwrite the system files, your user data & third party apps will remain in place.

When the Mac reboots it should look the same (but the OS files have been re-written).

    P.S.

You keep blaming this 'kernel thing', but do not seem to understand what it is. Please do not try to meddle with it. The kernel is where the operating system talks directly to the hardware. 'kernel_task' has the very lowest process ID - it starts first when the system boots, it is responsible for looking after almost everything the OS does after booting.

You can help the kernel out by not installing lots of software, especially things that run 'kernel extensions'. Mackeeper & other system maintenance apps add tons of unnecessary extensions - avoid them at all costs.

If you must run kernel extensions, make sure those applications are up to date - for example the Eltima syncmate, Xbox controller & Livescribe software are running extensions in the kernel.

To remove them you need to find the original source of the software & remove it via their instructions or use their uninstaller - if they have none, ask for instructions here, but do not find random instructions from the internet.

    P.P.S.

    Quit monkeying around in Terminal!

It is not a plaything. Running commands & then forgetting what they were and deleting random items is a recipe for disaster. You are likely to ruin this OS & make the Mac unbootable.

Your Time Machine backup will not help you if you have to revert to a version from before all of this messing around. You will reinstall all the crap that you are trying to fix!

We are trying to help you, but if you continue to poke & prod at things you don't understand in dangerous ways we lose patience & you may lose data.

    Good luck.

That's pretty random. "Other posts" doesn't have any meaning.

The kernel is your operating system. If you are experiencing specific symptoms, you have to explain exactly what those are. The details of how the operating system works are not straightforward.

I saw some very lengthy replies regarding issues such as this that involve copy paste paste so I guess i will try that now that I am more well-rested

Please. Do not do any copy and paste attempts.

Regarding the reinstall of Mavericks.....does it really take "DAYS" to reinstall?

I was getting ahead of myself. Once you have reinstalled Mavericks, don't mess with it for a couple of days. Just use it normally to see how it behaves. No one can really tell anything until we are both talking about the same operating system. The kinds of changes you have made make it virtually impossible to say what is going on. The goal for now is to get back to a known system.

Yes. Your only option is reinstalling the operating system.

    1.   Does anyone know if the "STARTUP" report from Etre is the way it should be?? It is in red and says stuff about 360 which I thought referred to my sons old xbox 360.  And I definitely had tried to get rid of this.

EtreCheck is just a snapshot of your system. No individual item, regardless of colour, has any meaning. The red is just to attract your attention so that you will ask about it. The most importing thing is to focus on what your specific problem is. Those red items may or may not have any relationship to the problem you are having. They are just part of the process of narrowing down what is causing whatever problem you are having.

In this case, that note means only that the 360 software was developed for an older version of the operating system and will no longer work properly in Yosemite. It should probably be uninstalled.

    2.  Is it possible to update the library items from  a Time Machine backup before the problem started?  It occurred yesterday and up til then everything was fine.

Yes. That is what Time Machine is for. But in this situation, your only option would be to restore all files on your computer from the other day. You cannot pick which files to restore in this case.

Thanks EtreSoft for breaking down my issues.  I've not done anything other than sort of methodically go back and forth from the User account that works to my account in which the one page (go daddy website builder) is not loading.   I've not deleted nor copied anything and that is VERY GOOD advice for the future.

I have reasoned (perhaps false) that the problem may be in something that is missing or something additional in my User account for Safari since the page Im trying to load won't load in Safari. (possibly with Java? or Flash?)  But I want to wrap this problem up and get going, so I just edited the webpage in the User account that was working and now Im in my account just trying various applications and trying to load different web pages, streaming videos, etc.  So far so good.  I've not found any issues.  (fingers crossed)

So I think at this point, I will forget anything about what all those System Insider files say and just use my computer normally and see what happens. If I end up finding quirky things then I know I will have to reload the OSx.  I assume when I upgrade to a new version these issues would rectify themselves too (but I am not going to upgrade to Yosemite as it is not getting very favorable reviews).

I sincerely appreciate all the knowledge that you and others on these boards provides to those of us less savvy.  Id love to buy you a virtual drink

If you have any more words of wisdom after thinking about where my problem might be within Safari?? or something else shoot me a reply.  Otherwise I am laying this post to rest since maybe it is not a big issue after all (like you said back at the beginning w regards to Kernel).

    Cordially,

    Lisa
