Whatever you decide to do, do not install Avast, which is arguably malicious in itself. If you are having trouble with your Mac, describe it in as much detail as you are able. Installing Avast or similarly ill-conceived garbage will only exacerbate whatever problems may exist.
There will always be threats to your information security associated with using any Internet - connected communications tool:
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.

No. AV software only claims to protect from virus not other forms of malware. Since there has not been a virus for OS X yet, AV software has nothing to do on a Mac but cause problems. Hence, the reason I say do not install AV software.
NO. useless. Macs don't get virus (and only sometime easily removable Browser popup malwares) so there's nothing to worry about 🙂
It will only slow down your Mac even more.
