we have two iphones but don't know what model they are. Is it in settings?
Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)
Settings app > General > About. You will need to scroll down just a bit to find the model number.

Yes.
Settings->General->About->Model will show you the Apple Part number for the device.
Alternatively, the actual model number is etched onto the back of the iPhone. Below the Word iPhone usually. Where all the tiny text is.
