Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

How do I kill a background process that is slowing my Macbook down?!

So basically I tried to run parallels 10 on my macbook pro and it did nothing but slow the entire machine to the point that it went out to the geek squad 2x and nearly back to apple. It got a full restore and seemingly everything was gone that associated the comp with parallels ...until I found this...running in the background and need to seek it out and destroy it from my computer!!!

The goal is to make it disappear and never come back...ps when I try to quit it by pressing the X (stop sign) button below the red, yellow and green icons it just turns right back on...please help

User uploaded file

this image below is when I tried to hit info and locate where it was within the mac...no idea what either means

thanks

Some things to try.

* Wait for someone who is a parallels expert to answer your question.

* Look in System Preferences, Users & Groups, Login items and in /Library/LaunchAgents and in /Library/LaunchDaemons for the thing that is launching this process.

* Look in "Open files and ports" in that Activity Monitor thing to see if you can spot the file's location.

* Use a search via command-f in Finder, asking to include system files in the search, to see if anything comes up with that name.

First you need to change Activity Monitior to view "All Processes" instead of it current setting. "My Processes." You change it with AM's "View menu:

Also make sure you have none of the following third-party garbage running/installed:

1) Anti-virus software

2) internet security software

3) so-called "cleaning/tuneup/optimization"

4) backup software that came bundled with an external hard drive (Apple's Time Machine is not a problem

5) torrent software

How much physical RAM is installed?

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.

Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.

Back up all data before making any changes.

You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

It looks like you didn't uninstall Parallels properly. If you just dragged the Parallels app to the trash, that's not the right way to do it. You need to properly uninstall it, using the uninstaller provided by Parallels. See:

http://kb.parallels.com/en/122653

However, that process does not appear to be causing any problems at the time of the screenshot you posted, and Parallels should not impact the performance of your machine when it isn't running. I suspect you have something else going on. It would help if you could download EtreCheck and post the report it generates in a reply here.

I found something in the folder library/input methods ---- so i completely got rid of the folder and then re-created it...prior to that I tried to eliminate just the parallels item within the folder and it would not let me citing that the item was still running...so I got rid of the entire folder...trying the etrecheck now...

Jan 24, 2015 11:28 AM in response to Joverine

So, looking at your report, one thing that is immediately evident is that you don't have enough RAM. 4 GB is what I would consider bare minimum for Yosemite. (I know that 2 GB is the technical minimum, but that's an unrealistic minimum.) If you need to run Parallels, that's going to be like trying to cook a full-sized loaf of bread in a toaster... there's simply not enough room.

You also have Kaspersky installed, which is likely to be causing performance and stability problems. I strongly recommend uninstalling that as well. You will need the original disk image containing the installer, which also contains an uninstaller. If you do not have that disk image any longer, download it again from Kaspersky. For more information on properly protecting yourself from malware, see my Mac Malware Guide.

There are a lot of SMART board processes running in the background. If you aren't using any SMART boards at this point, you should uninstall that software as well, using whatever uninstaller is provided by the maker of that software.

There is also a Seagate program installed. You do not need, and should never install, the software that comes on external hard drives, and should remove this as well.

Finally, you've got a system process called syncdefaultsd that is crashing a lot. Why this might be I don't know. It's possible that removing some of these other programs will help with that problem, or there may be deeper issues with your Mac that cannot be identified with a simple EtreCheck report.

(Fair disclosure: I may receive compensation from links to my sites, TheSafeMac.com and AdwareMedic.com, in the form of buttons allowing for donations. Donations are not required to use my site or software.)

The things that I've told you to remove all require uninstallers to remove. You cannot simply try to hunt down the components and drag them to the trash, nor can you use any kind of generic app uninstaller (like AppZapper, AppCleaner, CleanMyMac, etc). I've told you where to find the Kaspersky uninstaller because I'm familiar with that one, but I don't know where to find the others. You'll need to contact the companies involved for assistance with those.

For more information on properly uninstalling software, see:

How do I kill a background process that is slowing my Macbook down?!
