Q: MacBook Pro Shutting Down Without Warning

At least once a day, my MacBook shuts down and restarts.  I haven't noticed any correlation with an opened program.  I copied the error message, but since I have NO expertise in software, it's meaningless to me.  Here's the beginning of the message:

Page fault errors are memory errors.  You have 8 G ram right? But you have programs running in the background, like the ones that Ogelthorpe pointed out. Plus whatever your running at the time . Looks like, by the report you sometimes have multiple apps open also.

    Usually page fault problems have to do with memory. Are you getting the same panic report every time. Down at the bottom of the report sometimes it will say what was running. Or if you are using a memory intensive app, it could over load the system. You might want to try this. Start up you macbook holding down the command/option/p/r for three chimes and continue the reboot. If this keeps happening try to make note of what was open and what you were doing. Then paste the whole panic report. I forgot to ask how much memory do you have.

    Thanks my ginger.  I rebooted and let it chime 5 times (oops).  I'll report back with pasted error report if the shutdown happens again.  It's been consistently doing it everyday so I'll know in 2 days if it's fixed.  Again, thanks for your suggestion.

    These are prime candidates for you problems.

    The Norton AV is especially not needed.

     

    Delete them and see if conditions improve.

    Page fault errors are memory errors.  You have 8 G ram right? But you have programs running in the background, like the ones that Ogelthorpe pointed out. Plus whatever your running at the time . Looks like, by the report you sometimes have multiple apps open also.

    Not sure what you mean by delete them.  Are you saying to get rid of all of Norton?  I don't use airparrot anymore so I can definitely get rid of that.

    Are you advocating not using antivirus for my macbook?  Or is it that Norton isn't a good choice because of its voracious RAM appetite?

    1. NO A/V software is required on a Mac running OS X

     

    2. Norton software has a long history of clobbering Macs.

    In the end, what you choose to do is entirely your decision.  Barry and I have given you what we believe is the best advice that will serve interests.  If you want to keep Norton AV, by all means do so.

     

    To date no virus has infected Macs.  Malware has been a problem, but to install malware requires a degree of cooperation (or ignorance) on part of the user.  I have no idea what you mean by 'industry standard'.  Perhaps you are looking at Mac with PC eyes.
