If you are syncing using iCloud, it should, with some delay, show as completed everywhere. Is this not what you are seeing?

i know that is the way it is supposed to work but in playing around more & searching online i discovered that iCloud has to be open on the MacBook for completed to go across devices. i signed out of iCloud on the MacBook and it stopped working. strange...

    thanks for your help!

You are welcome. If you are signed into iCloud does it sync properly?

yes, it does work properly. it seems as if the iPhone & iPad are always signed and when i go to Syst. Prefs it says i am signed in. there is one thing off in the list Back to My Mac (and i don't remember ever doing anything with this list). might that be the issue? i've turned it on. we'll see what happens.
