It sounds like you aren't able to see your iOS devices in iTunes to sync to them. If that is the case use the troubleshooting in the following article, named:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for OS X
Follow these steps to resolve your issue:
- If you haven't connected your iOS device to this computer before, unlock the device and tap Trust. Learn more about the Trust This Computer alert.
- Restart your iOS device.
- Restart your Mac.
- Make sure that your Mac meets the minimum system requirements for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
- Install software updates on your Mac.
If an iTunes update is available, apply the update. - Check USB connections. iOS devices need USB 2.0 to work properly. If you're not sure your Mac has USB 2.0 ports, check the computer's specifications.
- Disconnect other USB devices and connect your device directly to a USB port on your Mac.
- Try another USB cable.
If that is not what is happening, would you mind elaborating on what is happening when you try to sync your devices? Is there an error message of any sort?
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Regards,
Sterling

I was under the impression that syncing is now done wirelessly, but maybe not the first time?
I'll try that now with the cable for iPhone charging/USB and let you know.

You certainly can set your device to sync wirelessly when connected to the same Wi-Fi network, but it does necessitate you connecting the phone physically to the computer to set that up. This article will help you get that done:
