Q: Why is up to 75% of my RAM immediately used up upon start up?

My MacBook Pro is the 8,1 version, late 2011, 2.4ghz i5 with 4gb of RAM. I recently bought a nice new hard drive, installed Lion and upgraded to Mavericks. I used to be able to handle massive audio projects in Ableton Live 8 with almost no trouble at all. Now on Mavericks it's pretty close to impossible. Not only that, but I have a large amount of free space on my drive, a very minimal amount of apps installed, and nothing booting automatically at startup. My computer is CLEAN. BUT! Immedaitely upon start up if not half of RAM, about 75% of RAM is already chewed up. I have included a screen shot of Activity Monitor. Please help! What can I do short of upgrading to like 16gb of RAM. Why is this the case with Mavericks?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

I'm going to update Abletone as soon as I can.

If the OP had the correct version (8.4.2) there would be no update available (unless buying 9)

But you can deal with it as the OP won't confirm his version.

Csound1, the version of Ableton I run is 8.2. The exact version is 8.2.6. I'm about to get down to business right now in Ableton. Hopefully I don't run into any compatibility issues. We'll see!

Still haven't gotten the time to run the logs, but I'm going to do that ASAP and post them here.

In Activity Monitor the WindowServer task runs for HOURS. And my computer was shut down all night. Things seem to be running smoothly at the moment. However, I get the feeling that things are a little tooooo quiet. Booting up from being shut down takes about a minute and a half. When I reach the login screen it's about another 30 seconds before I can click the text field to input my password. Odd, right? I feel like any moment my Mac is gonna wig out and cut the cord on the me! But let's see what kind of test it is to get to work in Ableton.

Thanks for the help so far from all you folks!

That is a version that is not compatible with OS X later than Lion, read the Ableton forums and you'll see the problems users have had with it.

8.4.2 is the correct version (quite a bit newer than your version), you can download it from Ableton's website.

The OP hadn't confirmed the version until after you had insisted that 8.1 was installed.

You still can't admit you made a mistake can you Csound1, 8,1 is not 8.1.

It's an incompatible version, if you read what I said:

You need Live 8.4.2, it is the only version of Live 8 that works correctly on 10.9.

You'll find that I included every version of Ableton 8 except 8.4.2

It matters not which version is used if it is not 8.4.2

I know & I don't dispute that we now know it is incompatible what you actually said was.

Only one version of Ableton Live 8 is compatible with Mavericks, and that is not 8.1

Keep twisting the truth to make yourself look good Csound1, never admit mistakes it makes you look weak.

Obviously I misread that post, and corrected it by including every version but the correct one.

    Have a point.
