Videos with the cloud symbol are still available to watch in airplane mode and I can't get rid of them.

All TV shows, movies, etc on my iPad have the cloud symbol beside them. However, when I put my iPad in airplane mode, many of them are still available to watch. Which means they are taking up space on my device. I am at max storage and I know that's why. Tried swiping left to right, and right to left. No edit button on the upper right. Tried going into settings and usage. Nothing. Any ideas?

I have solved the problem by going in, tapping the cloud symbol to download them, and then deleting them. They were being stored on my device with the cloud symbol as I have been gaining storage space by doing this. it is taking forever, but it is finally getting rid of them. Weird little glitch.

Not a glitch. That is the way this works. Once you tap that cloud symbol to start downloading a movie, it sort of remains in limbo until you totally download it and then you can delete it as you found out.

Why it works this way is beyond me, but that's how it works on my iPad and that is exactly how it wrks on any iPad - at least as far as I know. I have seen many users describe this very same behavior that you did and once their videos were completely downloaded, they could then be deleted.

No, the cloud symbol means that they are stored in the cloud, NOT on your device. The same holds true for anything else you've purchased, such as apps or music. If you tap on the cloud symbol, they will then be downloaded to the device (if there is a valid internet connection). If there is NO cloud symbol and simply has a button in that place that says OPEN (for example, an app), then the media IS stored on the device and is using it's storage space.

To verify that the media is/is not on the device, check under Settings/Usage/Storage/Manage Storage and scroll through the list making note of the storage space used.

So the cloud symbol remains until they are completely downloaded?

That has been my experience. I have seen a number of people asking about the inability to recover storage space on their devices assuming that the videos with the cloud icons next to them were not actually on their devices. But once the videos were completely downloaded, they were able to finally delete them and recover the space.

Have you actually tried to download the TV episode while in airplane mode? What happens? I'm not all that familiar with airplane mode since I don't have it on my iPad (I have the Wi-Fi only iPads) but I DO have it on my iPhone. I would assume that even though the cloud symbol button is next to the media/TV episode, if tapped, it would likely just prompt you to connect to either Wi-Fi or cellular to download or to disable airplane mode.

Sure you have Airplane Mode. It is the very first setting listed in the Settings app - right above the WiFi setting. All iOS devices have the setting for Airplane mode. All of my iPads are WiFi only and all of them have Airplane Mode in the settings.

Or am I misunderstanding what you are talking about?

And you are correct, Demo. I do have it and it was right in front of my face. For some reason (probably due to doing other numerous things, including trying in vain to rescue some save data for my kid's Terraria game which is somehow not included in the backup process), I didn't see it, as it's something I tend to not notice due to non-use. Thanks for opening my eyes, buddy...now I really should close them and stop replying with nonsensical replies. 😉

It wasn't nonsensical. You just didn't see it. I remember when Photos and Camera first appeared in the settings app in iOS 6, I believe, someone had to point it out to me. I had no clue it was in there. I think I may have even argued with them about it and then I really felt like a fool when I saw it, 😁
