Q: cannot sync new playlist to I phone

When I connect my I phone up to my computer and click on the phone icon to sync it. I then click on Music in settings and the sync music box comes up on the right  but the sub selections under the music tab are greyed out, so I cannot select them. The only active tab is the main Music tab and when I click this it tells me that is will remove all existing music from my I phone and sync with the computer-- all I want to do is add a new play list. Please help!! I have an I phone 5 IOS 8.1.2 and my Mac has OSX 10 version 10.9.5
