Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like the music on your device did not originate from this library, is the iPhone 5 currently synced with another iTunes Library? iPhones can only be synced with one library:

iPhone can only add music or video from a single iTunes Library.

Jan 27, 2015 3:55 AM in response to Matt_M.by dr. c bruce,Thanks Matt-- I managed to work it out myself-- turns out it I select the Music tab and then sync, even though it says that all my songs will be deleted, It actually takes me to the next stage which will let me select playlists to sync
