If you still haven't been able to backup your iPad to iTunes, I would like to recommend the troubleshooting in the following article, named:
If you can't back up or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod using iTunes
There is kind of a lot to it, so just take it from the top in order.

have finally found time to read this article and take all the suggested actions.
Sorry to say this, but that article sounds like "we know this problem exists, we don't have a clue, we hope to keep you busy as long as possible before you refer to Apple support".
Of course none of the actions worked. Is it not weird I can't backup a brand new iPad?
I'm at a dead end now, and don't know what to do.

If you can't back up or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod using iTunes
Contact support
If you tried these steps and see the message again, contact Apple Support
