Apple pay at wegmans

I used to be able to use Apple Pay at Wegmans no problem, but the last couple of times (in the past month) it doesn't work. What happens is:

Cashier begins scanning my groceries

I scan my wegmans shoppers club card using the little barcode scanner they have mounted next to the payment terminal.

Cashier finishes scanning groceries and tells me the total.

Even though I'd scanned my wegmans card, the payment terminal still says "Please scan wegmans card or swipe payment card", and only has two buttons displayed on the touch screen "Phone number" (presumably to enter wegmans account via phone number), and "Espanol".

I hold my iphone up to the terminal. The screen wakes up, my default card is displayed, I hold my thumb on the scanner. Phone buzzes. Payment terminal does not beep. Payment has not gone through.


What I think is happening is that the payment terminal is not in a state to receive NFC payments yet. If I swipe my credit card, it goes through, so the mag-strip scanner tells the terminal that payment is made. But NFC isn't ready.


This definitely used to work fine, so I suspect that Wegmans changed something on their terminals.


Has anyone else seen this type of problem? Any solution?

Try a reset on your iPhone.



Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

First opportunity try Apple Pay again at Wegmans.

They are definitely on the list of Apple Pay accepted stores here.

If the the reset above didn't help, try this. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings

Then try an Apple Pay purchase.


No data is lost due to a reset.

By the way, the iOS 8.1.3 update is available.

Tap Settings > General > Software Update.

The update itself is only 246MB's.
