There is no application set to open the URL itms-apps://

I've recently started getting a pop-up error message:

"There is no application set to open the URL itms-appss://itunes.apple.com/app/id789839298?mt=8&ls=1&at=1l3vbAs&ct=CKS&ign-m pt=uo%3D4."

Search the App Store for an application that can open this document, or choose an existing application on your computer.

Cancel Choose Application... Search App Store"

The specific app and appid sometimes change. I get the message when the computer starts up. If I cancel it will pop up again every few minutes.

Whatever is causing the error doesn't seem to be causing any other issues, as far as I can tell, but having to cancel the pop-up every few minutes is annoying.

Any ideas on what is causing this and how to fix it?

I think that was a URL format that Apple was using for the App Store, but I don't think they are anymore. Something is trying to go to the Contract Killer: Sniper game on the iTunes Store.

Given that it is a malformed URL and it happens at startup, you might want to investigate your Mac for Adware:
