Connecting MacBook Pro to TV monitor?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, that I am trying to connect to a TV monitor. I have connected it before with same HDMI adapter and cables (been a few years). Upgraded to Yosemite system and now cant get to work. The TV monitor says no signal on the HDMI input channel. I believe the monitor is a 720 display. Any suggestions or ideas as to what I might try to get this to work?

Hi Jason,

Thank you very much for sharing this link. I have read it and also added it to my permanent reading list for future reference. That way, I will be able to troubleshoot any future issues with connecting my Mac to my TV monitor (that is, once I get the right cable(s)).

I am still puzzled as to which adaptor to purchase to connect my mid 2009 MacBook Pro to my TV's HDMI in order to get both video AND audio. Is there such a beast? I understand the mini display port in the mid-2009 MBP did not support audio output, but is there a cable or box or xxx that allows this to occur? Or if I need to purchase 2 cables, can you guide me in the right direction as to which ones?

Again, thank you for taking the time to help those of us who are still learning. I truly appreciate it.
