I recommend you open the App Store and upgrade to Yosemite.
Backup first.

You can buy OS X 10.8 on the Apple Store: http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
Make sure your Mac supports it before buying the CD.
You will have to purchase Osx Mountain Lion (10.8.x) if you really want it.

You'll get a code for the Mac App Store, and you can download it from there afterward.
Alternatively, and if the editing software you wish to use is supported in Yosemite, and your Mac also supports it, the Update to Yosemite (10.10.x) is free in the Mac App Store directly.
How do I make sure my Mac supports OS X 10.8? Also, I read some bad reviews with Yosemite relating to slowing down and crashing computer. Thanks for your help on this.
So far neither I nor the users I support have had one problem with Yosemite. So far it has been rock solid.
If you post more details on exactly which MBP you are running including the RAM and free disk space, we can tell you if it will.
The link above specifies the requirements for Mountain Lion.
On your Mac, go to Apple Menu -> About This Mac, and compare your specs with the requirements.
Overview
For What its worth, I haven;t had any issues with Yosemite on a 2011 Mac Mini and a 2007 iMac. Both run very smoothly for what they do.
Thank you for all the information. I'll have to take a closer look. I have a MacBook Pro purchased in 2010, says 4GB of memory listed in hardware overview.

In that case you should be fine for both Mountain Lion and Yosemite.
If you do decide to go to Yosemite, a RAM upgrade will be helpful. Your MacBook Pro depending on exact model may be able to go up to 16GB. At the very least 8GB.
