Q: iWeb & Mavericks: domain opens but unresponsive

I use 10.9.2. and the last iWeb 3.0.4 version. After Mavericks update, iWeb opens the domain file, but I cannot start a new Site or add a new page.

I tried it on my MacBookAir and my iMac, same OS. It simply doesn't react, when I click to create a new page or new site. I am able to make changes to the old content, though. This *****. I have created many Sites in iWeb, so I am dependent on using it (updating old sites etc.). I don t want to be forced to pay 80 bucks for EverWeb. I prefer to decide it myself, when to spend money, and dislike to to be forced by update policy. Perhaps you guys know a solution. I do not have fancy websites, just image and text, no flash, no tricks.

    Try the following:

1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your

         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.

2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your

User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).

3 - launch iWeb and try again.

NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

If you're running Mavericks or Yosemite  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

If the above doesn't help continue with:

    1. move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
    2. launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
    3. go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
    4. move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
    5. launch iWeb and try again.

You are not being forced to pay 80 bucks for EverWeb and as for update policy - you need to remember that Apple has not sold or supported iWeb for over 2 years now and there have been no updates to iWeb either for this length of time, so you have had over 2 years to find an alternative to iWeb and unfortunately, you will run into problems when you continue to use unsupported products.

Thanks, I tried all of this. But the "New Page" or "New Site" buttons/menues are still greyed out. I simply cannot create a new page or site. The app as such does work, you can click anything else. Strange stuff.

Could possibly Onyx be responsible for this erratic behaviour, I did not manipulate system configuration though. As far as I can see, no other program behaves erratically.

and also I used monolingual to remove unneccessary languages from the system. but that should not impact on core functions.

Is there a way to re-patch the program whithout reinstalling Snow Leopard?

I did not make out from your reply what other free and comparable applications you would suggest to be used instead.

Also, it does not resolve the question how to transfer my website data in iWeb to other applications. Can you export the iWeb domain?

There is no way to export the domain file to other applications.  it's unique to iWeb and iWeb only.  j

If you want to see what other apps are available do a search in the iWeb forum for "iWeb alternative" and "iWeb replacement".  That will give you multiple topics where the alternatives were discussed.

From the limited testing I've done EverWeb is the most versatile of the alternatives since you can start with a blank canvas and built your own design.  The other apps are theme driven and force you into one of their themes.

Then other exception to that is Flux 4.  There are no themes and it's strictly up to you to create your own page  It does have a steeper learning curve.

All of the apps have a demo version that you can try for a limited time to see if it's for you

Flux 5 is of no use, too complicated. I just need a simple app for simple websites, as iWeb. So there is only one app, EverWeb, that does simple things? - image and text  nothing else. I can t believe it.

EverWeb is the only app that was patterned after iWeb and its simplicity.

No, of course there are more alternatives than EverWeb out there, but as OT has already said, it is the one that was made to be like iWeb in its simplicity and look so that the transition would not be too great.

Other alternatives to look at if Flux V is not in the running are RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro/Express 7, WebAcappella 4 and Quick n' Easy Website Builder.

There are other alternatives apart from this - you could also use WordPress.com that allows you to build a site online and then you choose a name and then it is published to the WordPress servers.  Once published, you can upgrade and use a domain name with it.  There are also other online web builders such as wix.com and a host of others.

After that, you also have the option of using the Content Management Systems like WordPress.org, Drupal and Joomla.  They may be a little complex, depending on what kind of website you want, but it does mean that you load it directly/install it directly onto your server/host and there is no need for you to keep web files on your computer - it is all online, which does have some benefits.

There are lots of alternatives and possibilities out there, you just have to look.
