Q: how can i sync the information on someone else's ipod touch to my computer?

Is there a way to sync the information on someone else's ipod to my computer in order to save the information? I want to know if I can get everything off my daughter's ipod and save it to my computer then reset the ipod. I have itunes and my ipod is synced to the computer. She also has itunes but I have not hooked her ipod up to my computer. Any suggestions?

Normally, you can't control/sync one ipod from two different computers. Only one allowed at a time. If you attach her iPod to your computer and try to sync it (and it has already been synced to another), the device will be erased - it will warn you that it's about to erase it, so watch out just in case. The reason for this is that then the music and other purchased content will be usable by more than one person (her and you). That idea does not make the music companies or movie companies or app companies very happy, so Apple will gladly erase her iPod when you try.

But apparently you can if you want to by setting up her iPod so that it is manually managed. See this article for an explanation of how:

    Does that make sense?

    Good luck.......

You want this. As discussed in the link, you need a third-party app to copy non-iTunes purchases to the computer.

The article you refer to talks about recovering not about syncing - they aren't the same thing, are they? The recover article you mentioned doesn't talk about manually managing the content on the iPod device - isn't that needed to accomplish what the OP wants? It did mention selecting the "don't sync automatically", but that's not the same as manually managing the content, is it?

Does it matter what version of iTunes you have do do what the OP is attempting?

I'm not an iPod expert by any means but the article I mentioned seems to get the OP what he wants and not sure what the article you mentioned will get him. I think as soon as the OP does step 3 it will erase the iPod because the "manually manage" step has not been done.

Thanks for any illumination you might be able to share...

The poster said he wants to do this "get everything off my daughter's ipod and save it to my computer then reset the ipod."

Ir seems he really does not want to sync

Well the OP said both "sync" and "get everything" -- perhaps they can clarify which?

Sorry about the confusion. I guess I am unsure myself. I need a way to save the information on my daughter's ipod. I thought that perhaps I could save it to my computer. Almost like transferring the information from the ipod to my computer. But I do not want to confuse it with the information in my itunes account that is from my ipod. Does that make sense? For example, if they were laptops, I would download all info from on computer onto a usb drive and have it saved there. Then I could put it in its own file on my computer. Is there a way to do this for ipods?

I think either of the above mentioned articles should work for you, but there is a missing bit of information.

What do you want to do with that content after you reset the iPod - do you want to be able to put it on another iPod/iPad that your daughter might get in the future?

If that's true, why not just log the new device into her iTunes account and download again all the purchased content (apps, movies, music, etc)? You don't need to back this purchased content up - you simply set up the new device with her existing iTunes account and download it to the new device and it's good to go.

If there is content that is on the iPod now that was not purchased like photos or mail or ????, then you need to back it up so that you can restore it later to another "idevice". In that case maybe you could back up the device to iCloud before resetting it - remember there is a 5GB limit for free iCloud backups (doesn't include purchased content like music, apps, movies). Then later if she gets another "iDevice" in future, download it to the new device along with the iTunes store stuff (for the purchased content) and again it's good to go. There is no need for your computer to get involved.

Read about iCloud storage here - iCloud storage upgrades and downgrades - Apple Support

If there is more than the 5GB limit of iCloud (you can get more but you have to pay for it) or you don't want to think about how long restoring all the content from iTunes store and iCloud might take, then back it up to your computer in it's own iTunes library (in a new user account so it's separate from your iTunes stuff). Backing the device up to it's own iTunes library on your computer would negate the need to do all that backing up in iCloud, or give you a secondary backup as it is possible for some purchased content to disappear from the iTunes store - not common but possible.

    Good luck...

One way to keep it separate is to create a new user on the computer and sign into the users and then the transfer/sync or whatever you want.

The iPod backup that iTunes makes does not included all things on the iPod. For what it includes see:
