Keyboard shortcut for Compressing?

Hey, I was wondering if there is a shortcut for compressing folders. I'm on OSX 10.7. I googled it for a bit, and people were talking about creating shortcuts. I didn't even know you could create shortcuts, but I tried but it didn't work. Since I've never done it before, I probably did it wrong. Does any one know of a keyboard shortcut for compressing folder, or I suppose, does anyone know how to make one?

Ok, so an update: I used a program called automater to create a command for the compressing, but the shortcut isn't working. I named the command AutoCompress, and when I right click on a folder I see the option "AutoCompress" and next to it is the shortcut Shift-Command-X. When I click it from the right click menu, it actually works and compresses, but when I do the keyboard shortcut, nothing happens.
