My iphone 5s contact list does not display the name on the phone and text message log

I have had this phone about 1 year now and previously I was able see in the phone log (incoming, outgoing, sent, etc) the name of the contact that applied to the number. Now it is only showing the number. The same situation is occurring for the text message log. Further, when in the Phone appl, I am having difficulty retrieving some records in my contact list. When I'm in the Photo appl, I can successfully retrieve all of my names in the contact for forwarding a picture via text message or email. This previously worked (just 4 days ago) but something changed. Could I have accidentally changed a configuration setting which clause this? Any help would be appreciated.
