Hi,

iMessages is the name given to the Service and type of messages sent over that service that Apple first introduced on iOS device like iPhones and later added to the iChat App on the Mac OS (OS X) at the Mountain Lion version (OS X 10.8) which happened to continue the iChat number and was called Messages 7

The iOS version on the iPhone could send iMessages to other iPhone initially and also do SMS to other non Apple phones.

As it was added to the Mac app it was able to sync the iMessages to the Mac.

Over Mountain Lion updates, Messages 8 in Mavericks and the version it Yosemite this has been improved.

Messages sent to the iPhone Number can be set up to appear on the Mac version and ones sent to the Apple ID can be set up to appear on the iOS devices.

Most recently the SMS text Messages can also be passed over to the Mac version.

Replying from a Mac seems OK but starting a new SMS seems a bit fraught at present.

On the Mac version you can move to starting the FaceTime App to Video or Audio Chat to the same Contacts.

The Mac version of Messages also inherits the things it could do in iChat before.

These involve AIM, Jabber (which includes Google Talk and Facebook Chat IDs) Bonjour or Yahoo Accounts.

Some of these include In-App Video or Audio Only Chats and Screen Sharing.

Most recently Linking the iMessages account with the Separate Screen Sharing App has enabled Screen Sharing in that account - to other Macs.
