Q: itunes could not back up the iPhone because the iPhone disconnected

keep trying to back up my iPhone 4, 32 GB, but continue to get the message above "iTunes could not back up the iPhone because the iPhone disconnected.". I don't understand as my phone shows that it is syncing. any suggestions or thought would be appreciated.

iPhone 4, iOS 7.1.2

If your iPhone is disconnecting during the syncing process in iTunes, then I'd like you to please follow the troubleshooting in the article below.
