dvd / cd not showing up on desktop

I've just inserted a blank DVD into my Macbook Pro but the disk is not appearing on the desktop. It's there in finder and I can burn to it using other software. I've just tested this and it works. And then it shows up on the desktop. But a blank disk doesn't. I just wanted to drop a few large video files onto it to burn and give to a friend but had to go throw a third party software to do it. I used to just drop files into a disk icon on the desktop and then drag to eject and be asked if I wanted to burn the disk. Easy. But now that doesn't seem to work.

Am I doing something wrong?

I've checked that the box is ticked under the finder preferences but it makes no difference. What is going on?

Hi beanwalls,

To troubleshoot this issue where your blank disc is not appearing on your Desktop, please follow the steps outlined below.

Follow the steps in this article if a blank disc (such as a CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R) does not appear on the desktop or in the Finder after you insert it.

When you insert a blank disc, your CDs & DVDs preference setting will determine what happens next. If it is set to Ignore, then nothing happens in the Finder. Follow these steps to change the setting:

  1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
  2. From the View menu, choose CDs & DVDs.
  3. From the "When you insert a blank CD" and "When you insert a blank DVD" pop-up menus, choose
any action other than Ignore, such as "Open Finder".
  4. Quit System Preferences.

The next time you insert a disc, it should appear as expected.
