How to copy a home DVD to Mac storage

I have several DVD's provided by my daughter of the grandchildren. I would like to store them on the hard disk. Right now, when I insert them into the apple superdrive, they automatically start running and then show a menu to select which date I want to play. I would like the DVD movies to act similarly except by double-clicking on them in a saved file on the hard disk. If I need another software to do this, no problem. Just need to know what.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for your quick response. However, I had previously looked at that same apple support document and found that it applied to OS X 10.3 and later. After further checking, where it indicates that the Image menu should be opened, the selection NEW in OS X 10.10 is not there. Being a novice, that is all it took to confuse me. Maybe I need to find a Yosemite book on Amazon.
