Q: Printer connected via WiFi, will not print.

I have a MacBook Pro (2008) running Yosemite 10.10.1 and it is connected wirelessly to my Canon MP530 printer (using a print server). Everything is connected correctly, but when I send a file to print, nothing happens. I am pretty sure I have the correct driver installed because this identical setup works on my other Mac (2009) also running Yosemite 10.10.1.

The only thing I can remotely think of is that on the Mac that won't print, it is an older Mac (2008) running Yosemite. On the Mac that wireless printing works on, it is a newer model (2009) also running Yosemite. I suspect it may be a hardware problem, but not sure.

(and yes, I have also tried the Gutenprint drivers, with no result). I can print from the 2008 Mac using the 2009 Mac as a server, but that's it. I just want to be able to print from the 2009 Mac without connecting it directly to the printer or using the 2009 Mac as a "server". Why does one Mac print wirelessly while the other one will not?

Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

That is the only way I could find the Generic Print Server.

Do you mean Generic Postscript driver?

How do I find the IPv4 address or DNS name of the print server?

Most print servers have an internal web page so that you can configure them. If you open your web browser and enter PS-736C74-U1.local. as the URL this should connect to this internal web page of the print server and via here I would expect you would be able to see what IP address is being used.

Another way to check would be to connect to your wireless router and it should show what IP address has been assigned to the print server.

PAHU - I must be missing something here...

This is a USB-only printer - which means - if I remember correctly - that Canon provides a USB-only driver. Which can't print via a "print server" device. It would take a CUPS "modular" driver like Gutenprint to print through the print server. Right?

    Has all of this changed?

For wldwmn64: what brand/model of print server is it (so we can refer to the manual)?

Yes, I meant Generic Postscript driver. Typo.

    Web browser method doesn't work.

I have connected the print server directly to the computer before and pinged it in order to find the IP address. I'll try that again.

It shouldn't be this hard. :/

Connecting directly to the print server probably doesn't give you the correct IP address....

A router controls the IP addresses within a local network.

When I go to the Canon website, it says there is no driver for this printer for the Yosemite OS X operating system. I looked.

This is an old printer. A Canon PIXMA MP530... made somewhere around 2006.

On my working Mac (Mac #1), all of the drivers work fine. Canon, GutenPrint and Generic PostScript.
It's Mac #2 that doesn't play well with others.

Yep. That's still the case Greg. But she is using Gutenprint. The issue seems to be with queue being created on one of the Mac's. If you look back you can see that the port being created is file:///dev/null. I'm not sure why this is so, but this Mac was previously owned and I felt that there must be some app installed that is causing this - especially when she is simply selecting the Bonjour advertised print server when adding the printer.

So in trying to rule out the driver I thought that if she selected the Generic PS driver instead of the Gutenprint driver when connecting to the advertised print server then I wanted to see if the queue was created the same or differently.

According to this, Canon has given Apple an updated driver for MP530 Series, for Yosemite:

OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download - Apple Support

Please read the first few paragraphs of the doc. The way we get current drivers has changed. - NOT directly from the manufacturer.

Seems like some confusion about which Mac - or which connection - is able to print.

If you are using Safari then you can enable Bonjour via Preferences > Advanced and then select Bonjour in your Favorites bar. This should then show the print server.

Hmm. To ping you typically enter the IP address of the device. So if you don't know the IP address, then are you entering the Bonjour name to ping the device?

And as you can see from Mac 1, it's not that hard. But there is something amiss with Mac 2 that needs to be fixed.

Maybe. Happy to have your take on the matter.

I read that she is able to print from Mac 1 when the MP530 is connected to the USB port of the print server. And she can print from Mac 2 via Mac 1 shared printer. But she cannot print from Mac 2 when connected to the print server - which on Mac 1 is shown as a Bonjour connection (dnssd)

I've gone this route already. When I am directed to the Canon website and I look for drivers for my model printer, I get this message:

"There is no driver for the OS Version you selected. The driver may be included in your OS or you may not need a driver."

My OS version Yosemite OS X.

PAHU - thanks for that clarification.

wldwmn64 - I believe the bottom line is - if you want to print via print server and not direct USB, you must setup both Macs using IP > LPD mode and use the Gutenprint driver.

As far as we know, the Canon-provided drivers for this printer don't support any network printing.

(I figured out from the queue name that this is an IOGear USB 2 print server. The manual says to use IP > LPD from Macs.)

I thought I was able to get the IP address of the print server but either I'm not doing it right or the setup just doesn't work that way. I was trying by connecting the print server by Ethernet to my Mac and looking under networks on system preferences.

The brand of my print server is "Trendnet TE100-P1U"

So how do I get the IP address of my print server?

Thanks for telling us the model of print server. - guessing doesn't always work!

Your router will have a built-in web page that tells you the IP addresses of connected devices. Compare to the two Mac Network pref/IPs and what is left is probably the print server.

If this print server was previously on a different network, it may have a manually set IP address outside the router's range.

The documentation for this device is so poor, it doesn't tell you how to reset to factory default (without being already connected).
