Q: Printer connected via WiFi, will not print.

I have a MacBook Pro (2008) running Yosemite 10.10.1 and it is connected wirelessly to my Canon MP530 printer (using a print server). Everything is connected correctly, but when I send a file to print, nothing happens. I am pretty sure I have the correct driver installed because this identical setup works on my other Mac (2009) also running Yosemite 10.10.1.

The only thing I can remotely think of is that on the Mac that won't print, it is an older Mac (2008) running Yosemite. On the Mac that wireless printing works on, it is a newer model (2009) also running Yosemite. I suspect it may be a hardware problem, but not sure.

(and yes, I have also tried the Gutenprint drivers, with no result). I can print from the 2008 Mac using the 2009 Mac as a server, but that's it. I just want to be able to print from the 2009 Mac without connecting it directly to the printer or using the 2009 Mac as a "server". Why does one Mac print wirelessly while the other one will not?

Any suggestions?

OK - you need to tell us the model of router you have - so we can read the manual.

So after looking around for a bit, I found that I have the users manual for my Trendnet print server. However, I am still unable to access the "web page" following the instructions in the manual. I will have to call Trendnet tech support for help.

(Or is it the router that I need the IP address for? That is easier to find, and I used that IP address and it didn't work either.)

So, if I understand the above correctly, if I "add printer" using the IP address option and enter the IP address of the print server (which I can't access at the moment), and the LPD protocol, I would then enter the Canon MP530 driver or the Gutenprint MP530 driver which "should result" in wireless printing.

    Confirm?

Yes, I think you understand the process to add the printer correctly.

Personally, I would be accessing the router (your Mac has the router's IP address in Network prefs), to find out if the print server is on the local network.

It may not be, especially if a manual IP address was ever set for it, and that IP address isn't within your router's subnet.

Maybe calling Trendnet will be helpful.

I have or think I have the IP address and subnet address and still, nothing works.

I contacted Trendnet tech support and they wanted $14 to help me. I said no, because it just isn't worth it.

This Canon printer is old, and this print server is also an old model and discontinued. Nothing I try works and I have spent enough time on this. I suspect however, that the problem lies with the print server, not the Macs. I am able to print via using Mac 1 as a server, so it's fine for now. I originally set up this print server on a desktop computer that I no longer have, and I suspect that may be part of the problem too, but I'm not sure.

One day this old Canon printer will crap out, and I will get a new e-Print ready printer that doesn't need a miserable outdated print server.  Then the problem will be solved.

    I consider this case closed!
Thank you all for your time and input.

If you wanted more help, you would need to tell us the IP address of print server and of the Macs. (Those IP addresses are local only - not reachable from the outside world).

Learning about local networks might help you with future printers, too.
