Q: can i jump from 10.7.5 to 10.8.5

Any harm in jumping from 10.7.5 to 10.8.5? I never updated to mountain lion but need to to use a new software but I don't want to go beyond what CS4 can support.

    Yes, you can.

    Upgrading to Mountain Lion

To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase a redemption code at the Online Apple Store: OS X Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. Use the code to redeem a download of Mountain Lion from the App Store. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion

             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later.

             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model

                 Identifier 5,1 or later.

             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.

             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later.

             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.

             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.

             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

         Are my applications compatible?

See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

Not especially, but you should still back up the computer before proceeding.

What does "not especially" mean? I hate updating but Sketchbook pro requires 10.8 and I want to use it. Ugh.

It means that there are no risks beyond those typically involved in upgrading; specifically, those are that you may have software installed which is incompatible with the newer OS, and a problem may occur during the upgrade and result in the loss of data.

He means there is not especially any harm in jumping. That was the way you expressed your problem. I simply stated that you could make the jump. Neil was stating there was no harm in making the jump. Different ways of saying the same thing.

What Mac do you have? The pre-2006 Macs this forum covers cannot run any higher OS than 10.5.8.

Oh my gawd! What a convoluted mess this has turned out to be. I followed Kappy's advice, purchased the update from Apple Store. Waited for an emailed PDF. Waited for an emailed code to OPEN the PDF. Took the new code in the now opened PDF and went to redeem my purchase at the Mac App Store per instructions. ITunes opens but the code won't work in that and an error prompt comes up instructing me to redeem this code at the Mac App Store!!!! Well, there's no place I can find to input said code. What a nightmare! Why did I want to do this again?!!

Click on the App Store icon in the Dock, not iTunes, go to the main page, click on Redeem under Quick Links, and supply the code.

Okay I found it. It's downloading now. I didn't connect the App store and the Mac App Store  are not the same. Thank you.
