Update from 10.6.8 to Mntn Lion
Do I need to back up all my files before redeeming this update? Will I need to reload all my software after, or is it more like a regular software update?

That would be a good idea.
It can be either. If you simply install after the download then it's a regular update. If you first erase the OS X volume, then you would have to restore your data from a backup.
