STICKY! THE Ultimate Self Cooling solution for MBP.(no accessory needed)

GOOD NEWS FOR ALL YOU MBP owners, finally we get a self cooling solution. No more heat, no more burns.

My MBP's regular temperature drops from 60+ Celcius to around 40C, and under 200% CPU Usage(with yes > /dev/null), it's still under 60C(before was about 80C).

Here we go:

http://www.mediamax.com/tom500/Hosted/smc-0.01.tar.bz2

This is a software controller for the SMC(System Management Control).
download this file, extract it, and execute the following command:
./smc -k F0Mn -w 2ee0
./smc -k F1Mn -w 2ee0

F0Mn means minimum fan speed for Fan 0, F1Mn for Fan 1. 2ee0 corresponds to 3000 in decimal. convert your target speed by(execute it in terminal):
python -c "print hex(3000 << 2)"

for example, to set to 6000(the maximum fan speed) for both fans:
# python -c "print hex(6000 << 2)"
0x5dc0
# sudo smc -k F0Mn -w 5dc0
# sudo smc -k F1Mn -w 5dc0

Enjoy !

P.S. put these commands at the end of your /etc/rc, so that it will be executed everytime on boot.

I installed smcFanControl and set my fans to 3200rpm each. I heard them rev up but my temperature still sits at 65*c (smcFanControl reads 65* while miniStat2 reads 59*).

Is this what I should be seeing? I opened my activity monitor and noticed my %System sits at 35% or greater all the time. Before smcFC it was never like this. Could this be the cause of my still high temps?

I answered my own concern and figured out what was causing the increase in system activity. MiniStat2 also worked itself out and now it reads correct temperatures. I went from ~70*c at idle to a steady 40*c. Amazing, THANK YOU.

Last question- how do I keep smcFC running in the background? It's in my startup items so when I come back from a full restart/shut down it will run but what about when I come back from sleep/standby? How do I keep it running then?

I've set:

Base Speed at 1500 RPM

Lower Threshold at 45C

Upper Threshold at 80C (the author's default)

Temp right now with Safari, Firefox, Entourage, and Skype open, plus d/ling Entourage update is 48C. CoreDuoTemp reports 106F. I'm pretty happy with those temps.

fan control hasnt made my fans noisy at all, whisper quiet, just a little wind up if i go to 6000.

apple started the fancontrol update in the first place, with smc firmware update, they just didnt take it far enough.
the reason we ask for apple to step in is to keep our warranty intact do you really not get that?

have you tried it? many are saying their fan noise actually goes away because as it ramps up its more balanced and sounds even.

So wut's the update on apple and the smc or any
updates coming. anyone still sending the emails and
feedback stuff.. i thikn this is the higtest view
rate post ever seen on APPLE FORUM!!

Probably because this is such an important issue to MBP & MB owners. From a TUAW website -

"If you're old enough to remember the fiasco that was the Apple III, you may know what I'm talking about. The Apple III was supposed to be Apple's business computer. It flopped, in part because Steve Jobs demanded no fans were to be used in cooling the beast. The result? The machine would overheat, loosen the solder used to hold chips in place, and the machines became legendary for their craptacular performance. The fix by Apple was to hold the machine a few inches off the table, and let it go, making gravity jam those chips back into place. Nice huh?"

So, I'm wondering if his Steveness mandated low fan speed and thus low noise for the waffle irons we bought? If so, it would take one brave engineer to go up against him.

If it wasn't for FanControl I wouldn't have it in my lap like I do right now.

So i have tried to follow this post closely and from what i understand is fan control lets me control my fans...well tried it out and it works great.....one thing tho my fans wont turn off now what should i do, i removed fan control from system prefs and they are still on even after a shut down =/ kinda loud too, i really just dont want to over work my fans. i have had a cool MBP but when i am gaming or somethign it gets hot and i need the power. anyways what should i do?
