updating help for old ipod touch

I have an old ipod touch v 2.2.1. that i tried to update in itunes on a mac book and it downloaded the newest version to the computer but when i go to install on the ipod touch it gives me an unable to restore message about 10 seconds into the update i tried things that were mentioned in the help as far as cycling power and that but am at a loss now. i know its an older device but it still works great but would like to update it

What is the exact wording of the error message?

I suspect you have a 1G (original) iPod touch. Those can only go to 3.1.3 by:

Purchasing iOS 3.1 Software Update for iPod touch (1st generation)

The 1G is the only one without an internal speaker and no volume buttons on upper left edge.
