Q: iphone 5s

Hi,

My iphone 5s has stopped allowing me to hear phonecalls in the conventional way. So, I can hear the phone ringing, but when I answer, I can't hear the person talking. The only way I can hear them is if i a) put the phone on loudspeaker, or b) put in headphones.

I've noticed that this started happening after I used headphones to take a call one day.

I don't know what to do - I've restarted, upgraded the software...

Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you can't hear a person on a call or voicemail or if the sound quality is poor on iPhone - Apple Support

Thanks for the link. I've tried following that prompt before, but I'm afraid that isn't the problem.

It's not that I can't hear them clearly, it's that I can't hear anything at all -- no problem with the sound quality, but rather no sound in the first place.

Turn off VoLTE in settings if it is on
Settings - Cellular - LTE - Switch to Data only
Reset the phone and see if that changes things

use the side control and turn the volume up - look at the screen as your doing so, does it say ringer or headphones as your adjusting the volume.
