Q: iMessages not sending/receiving but SMS still works (also affecting Facetime)

Hello,

About a month ago the iMessages app on my macbook pro stopped working correctly. For some reason I could no longer send or receive iMessages but I could still send and receive SMS messages. This is also affecting the Facetime app as well. Every time I try and text or facetime someone it immediately says it fails to send/call. I can still log in and everything, this only becomes an issue at the point that I try to send the message.

I believe I did something with keychains which I know just about nothing about around the time that this happened.

Has anyone else had this issue before? And advice would be helpful

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

    Hey patman12,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

The article below provides troubleshooting tips that can help you resolve the issue making or receiving FaceTime calls from your MacBook Pro. And, even though the article primarily addresses FaceTime issues, the information can also help resolve the issues sending and receiving iMessages.

    Hi,

What do you think you did to the Keychain ?

If you go to the Apple Menu top left of the Menu Bar and select About this Mac can you see the Serial Number on the panel that opens up ?

SMS still works as this is a link to the iPhone  via your LAN and not over the Internet.  The iPhone is getting SMS via the Carrier service and passing it on.

I take it you have tried Restarting the App ?

Using the Sign Out button in the iMessages account and quitting the app before restarting is and adding the Apple ID back again ?

The things in the link about checking Date and Time (Including Zone) are useful

Checking the System Preferences > Network > Advanced button > DNS tab is listing a valid DNS server (and not just the router's IP - Check TCP/IP tab).

Precise wording on any Error Message when it fails to send may also provide clues.

I had a similar issue with my Messages apps as well except that I was able to receive iMessages, but not SMS messages.  My solution was to sign out of my iMessages account on my MacBook Pro, iPhone 5S, and iPad 2.  I was also sure to turn off MMS Messaging on the iPhone.  Though I'm not sure it was necessary, at that point, I then quit the Messages app on all three devices and restarted all three of them.  I signed back into iMessages on all three devices and the Text Message Forwarding setting appeared again on my iPhone.  Then I was back to square one with adding devices for SMS forwarding and entering the codes from the respective devices.
