iTunes says I have photos on iPhone but there are non there!

I have an iPhone 5, a Mac and iTunes.

My iTunes says I have 1.63GB of photos on my iPhone.

My iPhone (Settings>General>Usage>Manage Storage>Photos & Camera) says I have 1.6GB of photos. Clicking further, it says Photo Library has 1.6GB and Synced from iTunes Library 0.7KB photos.

However, I'm confused (and concerned) because:

- I have no photos at all on my iPhone. Non on the Camera Roll or the Recently Deleted. I have no videos.

- In iPhone>Settings>Photos & Camera, iCloud Photo Library, My Photo Stream, iCloud Photo Sharing are all turned off.

How can I get rid of these phantom 1.63GB of photos please? How do I empty the "Photo Library" on my iPhone?

Many thanks for clear and step wise help for computer/phone dummy.

It has to do with Recently Deleted photos. First, go into General settings and turn off "set automatically", then set the date back a year or so (i.e. 2014). Now go into the photos app and choose Albums, the "Recently Deleted" album will say 0 but when you click on it, there will be lots of old photos there. Select all and delete and now you've got your space back!

On iOS10 (and previous I'm sure) - for anyone who still has this hassle - go to your Camera App.

  • Click the Icon to show your Photo Library.
  • Choose All Photos (top right).
  • Choose Albums (bottom left).
  • Choose Recently Deleted.
  • Delete All.

No need to change the date.

The iPhone stores your deleted images for 30 days (??) before actually deleting them.

If anyone knows of a preference to stop this behaviour I would be appreciative of a reply.

Finally seem to get the answer.

iPhone>Settings>Videos. Choosing the option to "Show All Videos" brought a whole load of photos and videos that had 'recently been deleted' visibly into my (Sunflower) Photos app. I fully deleted them within the (Sunflower) Photos app and checking back to the iPhone/Settings/Usage/Manage Storage/Photos & Camera, suddenly I'm down to only 136MB in Photos & Camera.

Thank goodness for that!

Btw, I tried turning on the iCloud Photo (Beta) to attempt to upload my invisible Photo Library to the iCloud (in order to hopefully delete there). It took 3 hours to supposedly upload 302 photos/vids to the iCloud (On the phone, I had a status bar and countdown of how many photos left to upload) but when checking in the iCloud (on the Mac), there were no images/videos appeared. So don't try that! Waste of time.

OK EVERYONE I GOT IT. I had the same crap 1.99 gig, here's what I did, turn on icloud storage and let it upload them all. It seems they store some optimized pics or something. . Or something to that effect. The usage of pictures is gone and I got my storage back. I found Icloud on your computer drive kill the pics. I dont think you need to but I did. Then turn it off icloud pictures .I turned off all icloud as im sick of them trying to get me to buy more storage.

Thanks for this. I have the same problem - 38 photos that iTunes says are on my iPhone, but there are none there in any form. So I have turned on iCloud . . .and lo and behold, it started uploading the 38 nonexistent photos to iCloud! However, after about half an hour it still had not finished, so I gave up . . . the iPhone says I have about 4GB of free space (up from 22MB!), but iTunes still says those 38 photos are there, taking up 122MB. Guess I'll try again!

I had this problem as well, ** discovered it is an easy fix. Open your photo library App on your phone. Next, on the bottom line, tap the "Albums" tab. There you will find a self generated album titled "Recently Deleted". Tap open that file and you see all your previously taken photos and videos that you thought were deleted but in reality, are not. Now, on the bottom line, click "Delete All". Your phone memory is now cleared up and ready for use.

Thank you so much! I have missed out on so many photo ops because of these mystery photos and videos. Setting the date back never entered my mind. I was surprised that the stuck pics/vids were only from Christmas 2014 and were already uploaded to my computer and deleted from the phone.

When I deleted each file from the album they were in, each one then popped up in my photos .... very annoying to have to deleted them all once again. But they are gone and I gained 6 gigs of memory!

So again, thank you so much ... genius :O
