The "cannot verify identity error" really does sound like an incorrect username, password or maybe even a connection error.
Adding an account is pretty straight forward.
Add an email account on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
This may also help. Does your setup ask for a server?
Set up Exchange ActiveSync on iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support
Your iOS device will now try to locate your Exchange Server. If necessary, you will need to enter your front-end Exchange Server's complete address in the Server field.
If no help, I would really talk with your system administrator.
