Sorry to hear you are having issues with your external CD drive and your iMac. If the drive in question is an Apple USB SuperDrive, you may find the information and troubleshooting steps outlined in the following articles helpful:

Jan 31, 2015 9:54 AM in response to tranmerjby MichelPM,If you are trying to use an Apple USB external SuperDrive with an older Mac that already has a built-in, internal USB drive, the Apple external drive will not work.
It is only designed to work with newer Mac models that no longer have a built-in optical drive.
There is a way to make it work with any Mac but the procedure involves using OS X Terminal App and using a series of Sudo commands which, if not familiar with the Terninal app or accurately inputting commands, can render your OS X system unuseable.
If you wish to try this at your own risk, do your own web search for the procedure using these search terms.

Jan 31, 2015 3:56 PM in response to tranmerjby MichelPM,The drIve won't be recognized until you actually insert a disc into the drive and the disc mounts to the desktop.
Your Mac doesn't "see" an optical drive until a disc is actually inserted and the info on the disc mounts to the OS X Desktop.
Also, make sure you are using one of the powered USB ports on the back of your iMac.
