Hi judymcc,

Is it possible that your iPod nano is in Disk Mode (that is, the computer is seeing it as a drive?). If so, try resetting the iPod to get it out of that state.

Another option is to quit iTunes and shut down the computer. That will quit any other applications like Finder that may be trying to access the device.

Unplug the iPod nano before turning the computer back on.

To return iPod to its normal operating state, reset it.

7th generation: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo should appear after a few seconds, then the Home screen should appear.

6th generation: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and Volume Down button simultaneously for at least eight seconds or until the Apple logo appears. You might need to repeat this step.

If the above step didn't work, connect your iPod to a power adapter. Then, plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect your iPod to your computer. Make sure that the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep. Reset your iPod while it is connected to power.

I hope this information helps ....
