Can't send pictures through text (MMS) when cellular data is off but connected to wifi
My wife and I each have an iPhone 5s through Verizon. Wife's iPhone is still on IOS 7 while I just updated mine to IOS 8.1.3 last night. We've hit our limit for the month on data and decided to turn off "Cellular Data" via Settings>Cellular. We're connected to Wifi at home and at work, and when we try to send a picture through text to someone with an Android OS phone, we get the red exclamation mark.
Is it not possible to send pictures through MMS without cellular data being on? If were connected to Wifi, does it NOT go through wifi to send?
We've hit our data limit a few times before and have done the same thing where we turn off Cellular Data, but we've never noticed this problem before.
I am assuming that SMS and MMS run through a different system from the normal internet, and that is the reason why an MMS cannot be sent through the internet and onto someone else's non-iMessage system. On the other hand, iMessage runs through the internet, so it connects just fine when we send pics to each other or people using iMessage.
Can someone please confirm or refute my thoughts and provide more information?
Thank you in advance!
