Sorry guys but I don't see the point in spending a lot of money buying a smartphone if one cannot use the smart functions of it.... There is something wrong in this product (hw or sw) and it does not fulfill the service it is supposed ... My 5S died last night with 42% .... had to load it 20 mn before the apple comes back .... I do not rely on the device anymore. I had it 18 months and the mess started with IOS 8!

my old 4S running IOS 7 does not have the problem.

and I do think that the WIFI handling has a problem. From time to time at home I suddenly "see" more than 30 stations where I normally "catch" only 5 .... Then 3 mn after they disappear ....

HI Brian I understand and I tried everything possible spending A LOT of time erasing and restoring but nothing seem to help. My carrier chanfed the SIM because they thought it might help, it did not.

I added in my previous message a comment of something funny concerning the WIFI

changing of ecosystem is not the solution I think. Prior to IOS 8 the device was functioning great ...

Brian, thanks for your help on this thread. I too have the battery life issue. Heres one more thing I would like to point out. I have an iPhone, a late 2011 MBP, and late 2011 Mini Server.

After a restore of my phone, and taking a lot of the actions in this thread about disabling location services, iCloud etc. It was working normally again. Until I opened my MBP. As soon as the MBP is on my battery in the Iphone starts getting warm and the battery starts draining excessively. It even happens when I am away with my phone but the laptop is on at home. I do not have iCloud Drive enabled on my phone. Only find my phone is enabled.

If I shut the laptop, my phone cools off and battery starts draining normally again. I think something in the cloud is stuck in a loop. Even if you disable it on the phone, but once had it enabled.

BRian, I tried what you suggested. At 9PM it was at 100% and now at 1:48AM iG's at 78%.

UNder the the stats for cellular, I've got App Store, FaceTime, Mail, passbook and settings all at 0 usage. Settings shows 8.4 kb but system services shows 2.4MB Comprised mostly of push notifications (1.6MB), networking (653 KB), media services at 103 KB, iTunes accounts at 52 KB and messaging Services at 8.9 KB.

BAttery usage sage is at 45%, Home Screen at 27%, settling at 11%, messages (background activity) at 9%, app store at 7% and mail at 1%.

maybe this this shows someone something that I can't see about what's going on. Thanks for any help Or thoughts.

Gator, great. You said:

I don't know what the first one you referenced, 'sage', at 45% is. Must be a typo. But, probably doesn't matter as that represents usage in the last 24 hours which is beyond your test period of 7 hours.

Focusing on data usage to rule out that it is the main culprit for battery drain, lets turn off push notifications, recharge to full and test again with WiFi off using only Cell data so we can get stats.

So,

Settings>Wi-Fi set to off

Settings>Notifications> for each individual app set Allow Notifications to off

Settings>iTunes & App Store>Use Cellular Data set to off

Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Fetch New Data>Push set to off

Bring to full charge

Settings>Cellular>Reset Statistics

review stats in a couple of hours for both data usage and battery drain in standby mode

Sorry for this second post, this Apple ID thing is just a bag of worms.

Brian, I was at 78% last night and didn't charge overnight. This morning when I woke up battery level was at about 50%. I hadn't done anything with the phone. At about 8:30 or so, I was waiting for an appointment so I decided to surf a little on Safari and installed 2 programs. Battery level is now down to about 28%.

The battery usage for the last 20 hours per Settings is as follows:

Usage 9 Hours, 59 Minutes

Standby - 13 Hours, 21 Minutes

App Store - 27% (probably form the program I downloaded this AM -1Password)

Safari (Low Signal) - 18%

Phone (Audio) - 17%

Home & Lock Screen - 15%

Settings - 12%

Weather - 5%

Messages (Background Activity) - 3%

1Password - 3%

I will try your suggestion in your last post and post back.

As a side note, as I am waiting for the phone to charge to 100%, it would be really nice if Apple gave us a switch in the setting menu to turn off all background activities, sort of a Battery Saver mode. Or at least allow an app maker to supply one. I have seen settings like that in my sister's Android phone. Not sure why Apple couldn't do the same.

Anyway, I will report back in a few hours after fully charged and the phone runs for a while.

Thanks again for the assistance.

As a side note, I just today began to see rapid battery drainage yet again after seemingly fixing it a few days ago. I went into Settings > Cellular > System Services and noticed that "Software Updates" was coming in at 6.6 MB, out of nowhere. That's pretty high considering I just reset the tracker yesterday and Exchange Accounts were only coming in at 2.1 MB over the past 24 hours.

I have not updated any of my apps downloaded from the App Store (I only have 5 or 6 in total), and I'm obviously running the latest version of iOS and no new releases have come out since 8.1.3. This Software Updates thing happened spontaneously last week too, around the same time rapid battery drain occurred the first time.

Anyone else seeing Software Updates taking up a lot of usage? Seems odd to me given that I haven't actually updated any apps or OS at all for about a week now.
