Can't Update Ipod. An Unknown Error Occurred (1453)

I have had the exact same error tonight, as iTunes continues to fail to install the new iPod software 1.3 for my Nano. Every time I push the "Update" button to install the update, I receive that error..."The ipod "David Hillis's iPod" could not be udpated. An unknown error occurred (1453)."

Does anybody know what this is? I can't seem to find any threads anywhere on this one!

I am having the same problem. I cannot update ipod with the latest software and I cannot update ipod with any new tunes. I'm not sure if mines a nano or nano 2nd generation, sorry. if anyone figures out whats going on please let me know! Jen

I did see another thread mentioning 1.3 but I'm not sure what's going on. I looked at the link below and no model of iPod shows 1.3 as being the current firmware (as of Oct 10)

If the iPod is working, I guess I'd stop trying until another firmware is ready.

Just wanted to notify you that the article you linked to ("identifying different ipod models") is outdated and currently has not been updated.

The new firmware for first gen nanos (1.3) can be downloaded (although it sometimes has problems), thus the new update does exist. 🙂

Also, First generation nanos' new firmware is different than the Second Generation nanos' update; First Generation nanos have 1.3, while Second Generation nanos' latest firmware isn't 1.3.

Just trying to clarify things.

Okay, I'm not sure if this is related to your issue, but try this:

1 - While you are getting your error message while trying to update in iTunes, go to "My Computer" in Windows Explorer (leave iTune up and running).
2 - Right-click on your iPod's drive, and click on "Eject".
3 - Go back to iTunes, and try to update your iPod again.


Also, although this isn't the same error message, try the technique in this post for error 1417 (when updating your iPod) -> A solution for error 1417, occuring when updating

Strangest thing...I finally gave up last night on this, closed iTunes and put my laptop to sleep. This morning I reopen iTunes, try to sync, and the update works. I tried it 3-4 times last night and it gave the same error, but this morning, no error.

I guess I should have known that Oct 10 2006 wouldn't be up-to-date enough. Thanks.

Similar for me. What I found to fix my Gen 1 (4Gb) Nano was to restart my iMac with the Nano attached to the USB port. When I opened iTunes 7 I got the update message before the summary screen and the update worked fine.

iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Had the same problem. Left iPod plugged into iMac, closed iTunes, reopened iTunes, and VOILA. Updated to current version 1.1.1 on my 2 gig Nano immediately and without and issues. Hope this helps ..........Ken.

Turning off iTunes and turning on again did the trick for me too. Installed the update with no further problem.
