Keys out of order, the volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired

Hi,

I can't explain why, but since 2 days my computer shuts down everytime I try to boot from my user. I booted from Disk Utility to check where the problem was coming from and after verifying my Macintosh HD, it says :

"Keys out of order

The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired."

Unfortunately the "Repair Disk" button is grayed ("Not available because the selected disk can't be written to").

I never backed up my data (come on Dropbox, find a way to upload data faster) and would very likely be able to access it.

What can I do to fix this issue?

I read on most topics about the same problem that Disk Warrior is the best solution. I'm looking for advice because I wish to know if putting 120$ in it is worth it.

Thank you very much!

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Well, first you'd need a backup so you won't lose any of your data. I would not depend on the cloud (dropbox) - a physical hard drive is best as a first backup.

Then, you need to be booted from another source as you can't repair or do anthing with your startup disk while booted from it.

Then you can try to boot from recovery (Command + R keys) when booting up; once in recovery, you'll see a Utilities window. Go to that Disk Utility and see if you can repair the drive from there. If that works, you're good. Boot back into your hard drive.

If not, Disk Warrior or Drive Genius may be in order - both cost money.

A last option (hopefully not) could be that your drive is failing (which happens to all of them sooner or later).

Thank you for your answer.

In fact, I have no way to access to my data and save it on a physical hard drive, because everytime I boot from my user my computer shuts down during when the progress bar reaches a certain point.

I already booted from recovery when booting up and went to Disk Utility to try to repair the drive, but as I described it, after verifying the disk they "repair disk" is grayed.

My Mac si 2,5 years old, so I really hope it doesn't come from the drive itself.

Do you think buying Disk Warrior or Drive Genius is my last option available?

Before you pay close to $100, a visit to the Genius Bar might be in order - the diagnosis is free even if you do not have the extended Applecare Plan. If you have that, just call Apple tech support.

You are supposed to be able to boot from the Disk Warrior CD; however, I do not know how well the current version works with that. The older versions were known not to work reliably booting up - the best way to use it was to install it on your hard drive, create a bootable clone on an external drive, boot into your clone, and run DW on your internal drive from the external.

I'd try the Apple store first.

DiskWarrior 5 ships on a flash drive. To use it with your 2012 Mac, connect the DW flash drive, then boot your MBP into Recovery. After the Recovery System finishes starting up, go to the Utilities Menu and select Terminal. In Terminal, type /Volumes/DW/go and press the Return key. Once DIskWarrior launches, try to repair your drive.

When you get this sorted out, buy an external drive and back up regularly with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
