Q: Restoring new iphone 6 from icloud backup and asked for someone else's Apple ID

I recently purchased the new iPhone 6. I backed up my iPhone 5 to iCloud so that I would be able to restore my new phone from that back up.

Here is my issue. A few years ago I let a friend connect their ipad to my computer and sign into iTunes with their apple ID. When my iPhone 6 was restoring, it asked me to sign in with my Apple ID and then it asked me to sign in with NAME (name of friend) and their Apple ID. I skipped that and just went along. I don't do alot of jigging around on my computer with my phone connected. I figured that an app or something that he installed my still be in my apps folder in iTunes. Later I opened iTunes and right clicked on an app that I don't have installed on any of my devices and there it was with his named listed in the summary.

If I delete the apps from my iTunes that were installed by him, will this prevent me from being prompted to sign in with his Apple ID? I will step by step below what I plan to do:

1. delete any apps that were downloaded by my friend

2. Connect my phone to my computer and sync with iTunes and do a backup

3. When this is finished, I will delete the iCloud back up from my phone (I am going to have to delete that backup anyway or I won't have enough storage for a new backup - I don't plan to purchase more storage so I only have the 5GB)

4. Run a new iCloud backup on my phone

So my two questions are:

1. Will completing those steps stop my phone for asking for his apple ID if I install any apps to my phone in the future?

2. When your iphone does a backup on icloud when locked and connected to wifi, does the old backup get overwritten? I turned backups off then back on and it wouldn't back up because there was not enough storage. I was surprised but then realized that this was a backup from another device so a new backup from my new device probably wasn't going to overwrite it, correct?

Thank you for your patience. I hope my post is concise enough and that I get some advice on how to proceed with this. Also, if you think I should post to another category please let me know.

    Hi Kat2007,

    1. Deleting the apps from the old phone and creating new backup without those apps will stop you from being prompted to enter your friend's Apple ID and password.  However, that really shouldn't be necessary because you should be able to simply skip the sign-in when restoring from the iCloud backup.  Did you see that option?  When you skip the login it will download only the apps associated with your account and exclude the ones from the friend's account -- but you can later re-download the apps you need using your own account and avoid the problem in the future.

    2. iCloud stores the most recent 3 backups of each device, so when you create a new backup the oldest of those 3 will be overwritten with the new backup.  Does that make sense?  Additionally, making a backup of a new device will not ever overwrite a backup from a different device!

    Thanks for the information.

I was able to skip entering his apple ID when my new phone was doing it's set up. I do not have any of the apps on my phone that my friend downloaded when they connected to my computer but I see them when I look at MY APPS in iTunes so that is why I think it is remembering that there is another apple ID associated. I was going to delete the APPS that say purchased by him in the get info summary. Then I was going to connect my new phone, and sync and do a back up on iTunes. Then in iCloud on my phone I am going to delete the back up - because it was from my old iPhone 5. Does this sound right, and that it will work to keep it from asking me for his apple ID?

If my backup is 4.5 GB and I only have 5GB of storage, it likely won't hold 3 backups then. Will it always tell me I am out of storage or will it overwrite the previous backup?

So the iTunes library and iCloud backup are completely separate -- you must be seeing those apps in iTunes because at some point they were transferred from the phone to the iTunes library.  I'd recommend deleting all of the apps from the iTunes library at once and then making a fresh backup of your phone.  This will transfer all of the current apps on the phone to the iTunes library (excluding the ones that were purchased with your friend's account, since they are no longer on the phone). To delete the apps from iTunes just go to your App library (using the Library buttons in the top left corner of iTunes), select all apps with Control+A on the keyboard, then press the delete key.

After you get all of your data saved on the phone (iCloud restore can take awhile to completely download everything), you can go ahead and delete the old iCloud backups and create a new backup of this phone.  This may help:  Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support

Additionally, the 3 iCloud backups stored don't actually take up 3 times the amount of space.  Somehow they have it set up so that the last three backups only take up the space of your most recent backup.  I'm not really sure how (maybe they just don't count the oldest 2 backups toward your 5 GB limit).

Please bare with me, I just want to make sure I do this right....

    - open my iTunes (without iPhone connected) and delete ALL the APPS in the APP library

    - connect my phone and back it up (I suppose I should import my photos to iPhoto but not delete from my phone when asked)

    - Then would I do a sync?  or would it not matter since nothing changed on my phone? I tend to over think these things

    - then disconnect my phone / go to iCloud / storage / manage storage / name of backup/ scroll down and delete backup

    - then go back to iCloud / turn backups on / back up now

I feel like something is missing here because my new phone was restored from the back up of my old phone that was prompting me to enter my friend's apple ID. If I sync with iTunes after deleting all the APPS and backing up then I will have a good version of the phone with no trace of his APPS/Apple ID.

    What do you think?

Yep; you've got it!  I don't believe there's anything missing -- at the moment you should have the correct data on your new iPhone.  After deleting the apps from iTunes and backing up your new phone to iTunes, iTunes will also have the correct data saved.  Once you delete the old iCloud backup and create a new iCloud backup with your new iPhone, iCloud will also have the correct data   So everything should be good to go after that, with no trace of your friend's apps or Apple ID!
