Q: mavericks messages not screen sharing

Hello. a couple of days ago, messages stopped screen sharing. I've tried 4 different computers all over the internet (3 different physical outside locations) and the only one that was able to share out was a 13" mac book pro. Anybody with a 30" screen couldnt share their screen. All computers are running 10.9.5. Only 2 of them have the security update and remote updated installed from the 27th, the laptop does not.

We've tried screen sharing with aim and google accounts with no luck. All other functions work (text, audio, video).

The screen sharing starts, shows the banner (grey box, white lettering) that you are sharing, but the other computer says "waiting".

any thoughts?

    UM-LINUX GURU:

    Thanks for the information.

I was able to downgrade from ARD client 3.8 to ARD client 3.7 on two Mac Pros running Maverick and got screen sharing to work again over the internet.

Now I just have to avoid making the update on the ARD client again or make the jump to Yosemite once and for all.

Here is the link to report the Screen Sharing bug regarding ARD clients 3.8:

Kudos for all of this information.  Although helpful this is not often a realizable solution for many of us.  I have now run across a new wrinkle.  ATT and WOW in my area have very slow internet speeds.  It seems this was never an issue before but is now as Ralph suggests.  I happened to be a client's house yesterday and was looking at the Video Connection doctor and sure enough Video and Screen share had red X for speeds too slow.  This may explain part of my issue.  That person will be upgrading their service this week and I am eager to see if that solves part of the problem.

I certainly hope Apple has fix when 10.10.3 is released.  For many people the Auto Update feature has been enabled and they would not even know about ARD client.

Ralph: I have an Apple Airport Extreme.  I would be interested in learning how to open the ports you suggest. Again, what makes the Mac so seamless is that it just works and takes care behind the scenes.

Thanks for all of your help,

    Debbie

    Hi,

    On the Internet Speed issue.

Try setting the app to 500kbps.  (Messages > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth drop down.)

This is actually fast enough for 4 way Video chats.

1-1 Video chat can get away with 128kbps  - Messages will drop the pic size and the frame rate  to do so which effects the smoothness of the video.

Screen Sharing in AIM and Jabber accounts also needs these speeds.  ( I am not sure about the Screen Sharing App method iMessages uses but all use the Apple Remote Desktop engine so it can't be far off).

Limiting the Bandwidth also has some other positives:-

If the local service varies too much this can drop it below that disturbance.  (Messages can Buffer to a limited extent but this is based on early top speeds of a 1500kbps connection and things have moved on from there)

If one end if on a much faster server and they both set this speed there is less likely hood of one end "overrunning" the other and saying the other end has not answered just because it is slower.

    Airport Extreme.

It is a while since I delved in to the current layout of that device.

In Pics I do have the Port Mapping Protocol  that is the best thing to Enable was in the NAT tab.

    Picture 4.png

It does not need Settings for specific Ports after being Enabled.

It then allows the Computers and other devices to "tell" the Airport to allow the ports it wants to use.

Thank you for finding the source of the problem on Mavericks.

I have used TimeMachine backup to revert contents of /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ to version 3.7.1 on target machine and now Messages ScreenSharing works again. I have tried to revert to 3.8.2 (prior to v1.1) with no success.

Apple now has ARD client version 1.8.5 out.

It seems to screen share now with older systems but it is slower to make the connection.

You need to be more patient with the connection being setup.

I am having a hard time following versions here.  1.85 ARD vs 3.8.2.  At any rate, let me know if it solves the problems.

As far as I know, the latest version is 3.8.4 and it comes with fix for the mentioned problem:

I have a MAC Book Pro running Yosemite 10.10.3 with the latest RDC 3.8.4 and tried screen sharing with my sister's MacBook Pro Maverick 10.9.5 also running RDC 3.8.4. We could get Audio but Screen Sharing still fails.

Somehow this does not surprise me.  I am sure one of the above will have an answer soon.  It is really frustrating.

    Sorry, I meant 3.8.5 and not 1.8.5.

We are still occasionally having issues with 3.8.5 and screen sharing.

There are many factors to consider - router, network, firewall-open ports, message account, ARD, etc.

We have yet to figure out what is the cause now.

We have found Skype screen sharing to be the most reliable way to share screens between two Mac users and Mac/PC users

However, Skype is not as capable at screen sharing because only the person sharing his/her screen can control it.

ARD client 3.7 seemed to be the most reliable with older systems (prior to Yosemite) in screen sharing using iMessage.

However, I am sure there were reasons 3.8 was introduced with improvements over 3.7.

I checked this again and my system shows 3.8.4 with an updated of May 2, 2015.

    Sorry about the confusion here.

I can't edit my original post for some reason.
