black menubar using screen sharing?

New MacMini (7,1) running 10.10.2 with OS X Server 4, both loaded in last week. When I connect with screen sharing from my Macbook Pro running 10.10.2, the menubar on the MacMini is blacked out.

Special note is that the MacMini is running headless.

Also, I see only a 1280x800 screen view and no option to set it to 1600x900 like my MBPro.

Any suggestions?

Connect it to a monitor or TV (via HDMI) so that you can set the resolution you want. I don't think it matters after that. I have a new Mini that I'm using as a home server. It's connected to my TV via HDMI; however, I rarely have the TV set to that input so there is nothing on the TV end of the cable. Maybe all that matters is having an HDMI cable attached to the Mini after you've first connected it to a display and set the resolution.

Also, my Mini is set for 1600x900 and works perfectly when I access it by screen sharing.

If you do this and are still having problems, perform an SMC reset. On a Mini, do the following:

Unplug the power cord from the Mini (not from the wall...it must be from the Mini)

Wait at least 15 seconds

Plug the power cord back into the Mini

Wait at least 5 seconds

Reboot

Thanks, Scott. I did that initially and had the resolution set to the 1080P resolution, and it worked fine. I shut it down, moved it to my study (no TV there), brought it back up, and now when I bring up Preferences->Display, the options are "Default for display" or "Scaled." If I select Scaled, I have only 2 choices, 1280x1024 or 1024x768.

I've discovered that there actually IS an option to make the menubar and dock dark. However, that's not the problem here. The labels on the menu are in black text (on black background), so they don't show up. If I mouse over the menubar, the menus do drop down and they are black background with graphite text which is legible. Is this a bug when in VNC mode?

FINALLY! Here's what I did. Turned on Menubar Dark Mode in Preferences->General, exited Preferences (hopeful that this would save the change), then rebooted (hoping that consistent parameters would be loaded). It worked.... In retrospect, I wish I had option clicked the Finder icon in the dock and done a relaunch to see if that fixed it.
