Q: iomega zip drive disk tool 4.3 wanted

Hello everyone! I bought a iomega Zip Drive to transfer data to my LCIII. I followed the instructions of the iomega manual and no luck. Overtime I start macintosh 7.5 at my LCIII no iomega zip drive icon is displayed at my desktop. The manual says that it should be "Disk Tools 4.3" I have the disk inserted but no luck. The zip drive seems to work. I also cheked the SCSI cable connecting my LCIII to my Macintosh SE and it worked, I transfer a few files from one machine to another. So the cable is fine. Thats why im thinking that the problem could be the Zip Disc Tools 4.3. Is there ant place where I can download the driver 4.3 and install it with floppys?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Carlos,

Is it a Zip 100 SCSI drive? Did you get any software with the drive? Was the Zip disk brand new or used? Any information about previous formatting etc?

The following web page could possibly be of interest to you.

    http://www.vintagemacworld.com/pluszip.html

The page describes how to make a Zip drive work with a Macintosh Plus (using a third-party formatting utility). A modified procedure may or may not be applicable in other cases. You may want to carry out a few experiments, for example, with your LC III.

    Addendum

If you have a fully working Macintosh computer, you can copy a suitable formatting utility to the internal hard disk. From there it is easy to reformat a Zip (100) disk in a Zip drive connected to the SCSI port. Depending upon the utility, a "format" command may mean only a basic low-level formatting, or a full formatting with low and high levels including disk driver installation. Sometimes something like "easy setup" or "initialise" is used for the full operation.

Often, an inserted (properly initialised) removable disk does not appear as it should on the Desktop. In that case, a utility like Mt. Everything or SCSIProbe can be very useful.

Just to be sure - you do have the SCSI Zip 100 drive and not the one designed for PCs that connects to a parallel port?  The PC version has one female DB-25 parallel port (that's identical to a DB-25 SCSI port) and one male DB-25 parallel port.  The two buses aren't the same or compatible.  The SCSI Zip 100 & 250 drives have a pair of black slider switches on the back of the drive between the DB-25 SCSI ports.  One enables/disables termination of the bus and the other changes the SCSI ID from 5 to 6, whichever is preferable for your setup.  The software that you need is IomegaWare, with version 4.3 being the last release for pre-OS X Macs.  The "Iomega Guest" program will let the Zip drive function, without installing the driver to the Extensions folder of the hard drive.

    Carlos,

I have carried out a few simple tests with a Zip 100 (earlier PC-formatted, but since then Mac-reformatted) disk in a SCSI Zip drive connected to a System 7.5.3 PowerBook 540. It was not surprising to find that Apple HD SC Setup did not recognise the drive/disk. Also, Drive Setup 1.7.3 could not handle the drive. However, Drive 7 and Lido formatting utilities worked fine. So, you will likely not need any special Zip software at all. Just try a complete formatting operation with a third-party utility. Also, having Mt. Everything available is a good thing.
