upgrade video card in Mac Pro Quad Core

I run a Mac Pro 2.66 Quad-Core (16 gb RAM) on Yosemite. My Final Cut Pro is really bogging down. I want to upgrade from my NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, 512mb. Do you have a recommendation?

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), 16 gb RAM

I don't think that will help but you can pick any beefier card and throw money at it.

FCPX is almost completely CPU-based, as I understand it. That's one reason it will work well on almost any current Mac. Your problems may be based on the native codec you are trying to use or other bottlenecks in your system. But there are several folks here who know how the application functions much better than I do.

The following AMD, ATI, and NVIDIA graphics cards are available in Apple computers and support OpenCL in OS X Mavericks.

NVIDIA

  • GeForce 320M
  • GeForce GT 330M
  • GeForce GT 640M
  • GeForce GT 650M
  • GeForce GTX 660M
  • GeForce GTX 675M
  • GeForce GTX 680MX
  • GeForce GT 750M
  • GeForce GT 755M
  • GeForce GTX 775M
  • GeForce GTX 780M
  • GeForce 9400M
  • GeForce 9600M GT
  • GeForce 8600M GT 128MB (Note: OpenCL compatible, but does not meet system requirements for Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4.)
  • GeForce 8600M GT 256MB
  • GeForce 8600M GT 512MB
  • GeForce GT 120
  • GeForce GT 130
  • GeForce 8800 GT
  • GeForce 8800 GS
  • Quadro FX 5600

Give those FCPX wonks a day or two to check in.

Hey there. I have exactly the same system, with four SSD's. My graphic delay is between 7-13seconds per click Since Yosemite. Its so awful that Ive stopped making as much music as I used to. I swapped out a GT780 at the same time as upgrading to Yosemite (for Kontakt) So I cant give a definite about weather a new vid card will help. Genius bar are also useless as they dont support Logic Pro or old machines such as ours. However:

The forums have been full of this problem across all systems, including new ones, for about two years and no solution has been reached. A few career Logic friends have swapped or are re-rigging some major studios over to PT and DP here in london as apple have been absent from its pro user base for a while now.

I am considering following them over to Performer but before leaving apple, PLEASE let me know how you got on with upgrading your VideoCard! I dont wanna leave just yet!!
