You can transfer photos and some files from your Mac to iPad using possibly Airdrop. But you have to have the app for that file on your iPad (e.g.Pages, Numbers, Keynote).

Files such as Pages, Numbers, Keynote and others could also use a Cloud solution like DropBox or Box or iCloud Drive.

Attach your iPad to your Mac and then open iTunes and select your iPad. Then click the Apps section under "Settings" where you will see a File Sharing section. In here you can select an app to see what documents are currently stored under it for your iPad, and be able to download them to your system. You cna also upload documents that the program can handle to the same view, and have them be available to the app on the iPad.

For instance, if you have Adobe Reader on your iPad and are viewing a PDF called "mydocument.pdf" then you will see "mydocument.pdf" in the list of documents when you select Adobe Reader in iTunes. You can select this document and choose Save To, or if you have another PDF on your Mac that you want to read on your iPad, you can click the Add button to copy it up (you can also drag and drop from this window).

Alternatives to this are to use tools like Dropbox or BitTorrent Sync for syncing your documents between your Mac and your iPad.

Yes you can (see my reply to the OP) Here's a screenshot of the interface for this in iTunes:

Thank you Topher. That's actually easier than using Airdrop ( edited my post).
