My iPhone 5 won't show up in Windows Explorer

After years of no problems, I'm trying to plug in my wife's iPhone 5 on the USB on our Window 7 PC to download the pictures. I hear the noise when an external device is connected to the computer and iTunes is having no problems seeing the phone plugged in. However, Windows 7 does not display the iPhone in the Windows Explorer, not in the "Device Manager" and not in the "Devices and Printers" in the Control Panel. My Windows 7 is completely up to date and I'm only 1 iOS update behind. Would that really make the difference?
