Q: macbook pro restarts on its own

My mac book restarts on its own, sometimes as many as 2-3 times within a couple minutes of operating.   then it seems to be ok for a while and does it again.   Any tips on correcting this would be appreciated.   I purchased a laptop cooing pad, thinking that it may be a heat issue.   Not sure if it helps or not, at times it still malfunctions the same way.
