Q: 85W Mag Safe adapter plug catches on fire

The plug portion on the charger block has begun to melt as a result of sparking and flaming at the base of the prongs inside the adapter.  The plugs are no longer retractable and have seized as a result of the melted plastic caused by the flames.  This is my second charger that has done this–so this issue might possibly be linked to the computer itself.  Has anyone seem similar issues?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, iOS 8.1.3

Hello scsarver and welcome to Apple Support Communities,

It will help us diagnose your problem to know the exact model, size, year built, RAM installed and OS you're running.

Did you save the last power adapter that this happened to?

Were these both Genuine Apple parts? Purchased where?

Go to the Apple - "About this Mac - More Info - System Report - Power" and post all that it says about your battery.

You could also run  Apple Hardware Test and see if that shows anything.

Should the issue be with the MagSafe adapter, or just the ports in the MacBook,

you may be able to see what may be the cause of the symptoms you see, here:

•Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters - Apple Support

•Mac notebooks: All about batteries - Apple Support

•Intel-Based Apple notebooks: Identifying the right power adapter and power cord - Apple Support

The issue may have gotten to the point where a replacement MagSafe Board

(the DC-in Board, inside the computer itself) may need to be installed. This, a

job for an expert trained technician; least other damages occur in the process.

You could get some ideas about the level of difficulty involved with this last idea

by looking into http://iFixit.com mac portable repair guide for your exact model.

https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro - note three sections, + many within.

Hopefully there is something that can be done to resolve the situation.

    Good luck & happy computing!
