Q: Bootcamp stuck in rebooting loop

Hi guys how is everybody doing?

I got a question and I hope you guys can help me with this.

I've got a MBP with Bootcamp (Windows 7 Ultimate) on it.

I was installing software and after it finished it said it had to restart, so I did.

Now, when I start my MBP and boot into the Windows partition the "_" symbol blinks a couple of times and then the system just reboots again.
Because I've set Windows as my boot disk, it just keeps looping without me even touching it.

I've tried booting into safe mode by pressing F8, but the difference is that the "_" sign blinks maybe 2min longer, but then starts rebooting again.

I've tried using my original install disk to repair Windows, but when I select my windows disk I get the message:

"This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disk that is compatible with this version of Windows".

This confuses me even more, does it have to do with the fact that I've installed updates/Service Packs later on? That the disk is older?

There is a lot of software and data on the Bootcamp disk that would be terrible for me to lose. Therefore, a fresh install is not possible for me.

Could somebody help me out on this one? I would be eternally thankful!

Kind regards,

Gino

Are you able to boot into OSX?

You seem to have installed updated drivers from Windows Update which are incompatible with Apple Hardware.

What version of OSX are you currently running?

You can use Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs - Apple Support to execute an SMC and PRAM reset to get back to OSX, if you need to.

    Hi Loner T,

    Thank you for your reply!

Yes I am able to boot into my OSX Yosemite 10.10.

I have no trouble booting into OSX, it's just the Windows partition I can't get into.

Can you post the output of the following OSX Terminal commands? (Enter your password for "sudo" commands, and it will not be echoed back).

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

Hi Loner T, once again thanks for the reply!
Here are the outputs of the terminal commands:

    EDIT:
Maybe I should also add that I've try booting into safe mode, but can't.
I've also tried booting into the bios but I also can't get into here.

The screen stays black with the white "_" (or sometimes it's not even there) blinking, and after just letting it be for a couple of minutes it reboots again.

I've also tried to reboot from my Windows 7 disk, go into repair, but with my own one it said that the software was too old (I'm guessing because the SP1 isn't on there).
A friend handed me a Windows 7 disk with SP1, but when I boot from that disk it just brings me to a clean install of Windows 7, no repair option.

Then I also tried to create a Windows 7 System Repair Disk on a different machine, but also no luck.

Can you post the output of the following Terminal commands

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C  - This dumps the NTFS header.

sudo fdisk /dev/disk0 - This dumps the MBR.

All your output looks clean. Since you mentioned

I was installing software and after it finished it said it had to restart, so I did.

What type of software is this? Does this update Graphics drivers or was there a Windows Update with drivers in it?

    Hi Loner T,

Once again thanks for your reply, you've been a real help so far!

The software was a Windows 7 Loader/Activator. Since my own (genuine) Windows 7 Disc was a basic 32bit Home Premium, my friend offered to install a 64bit Ultimate one he had. It worked like a charm for a while but later on said it was not genuine. So I referred back to my friend and he handed me this Windows 7 Loader. He said it worked on his PC. I think that the loader was maybe meant for a PC, because I remember it said it was installing stuff for e.g. the BIOS. Maybe it was not Bootcamp compatible?

Gosh, I don't think I'll ever accept any of his favours/tips again..

I just want to be able to get back in there (reverse what's done), make a proper backup of all the files, software and plugins I got, and get a proper Windows key for it. So I won't have to deal with this stuff ever again.

One option is to use Winclone (a commercial product) and pretend that your are migrating from one Mac to another. It requires a generalization using SysPrep, which strips out all drivers. This backup can then be restored and BC divers re-installed.

    Hi Loner T.,

I currently have Winclone and I've browsed some websites to do some reading on how to do this migration.

The only thing is that just like you've said I had to use SysPrep, but the problem is that I can't boot into Windows at the moment to perform this SysPrep?

If you have access to another Windows + SP1 machine, can you create a Repair disk and use that to Repair your Windows installation? The other option is to use a W8+ Repair disk to repair because it is a newer version of Repair.

    Hi Loner T.,

Thanks for your help once again!

The only thing is that like I said before, I've already tried to create a repair disk with a different Windows machine, but I couldn't boot from the disk.

In case the W8 repair disk also doesn't work, is there anything else I can try?
