Q: Computer turning off

Hi,

I have had a number of hard drives daisy chained to my Mac for some time now. When not using then I usually turn them off so that they are not on the system when not required.

After updating my system to OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 I now find that when I turn off the power to the drives the computer itself turns off. It is a nuisance.

I would not mind leaving the drives on but I don't know how to eject them and then re-connect them without turning the power off.

I just wonder why it does this now and it never did so before the update. Is there a setting I can change somewhere to stop this.

Please help.

Chris

    Hi chrisc1953,

I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are saying that when you power off your external hard drives your computer suddenly shuts down or powers off (without asking or indicating that it is about to shut down), you may actually be experiencing a form of kernel panic. If that is the case, you may find the information and troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:

    Thank you Brendan,

I shall look through this and see what I can do. Before I got your answer I tried two things:

    1. I thought it might be a power thing as the drives and the Mac were connected to the same power board. I changed them to separate power sources but the same thing happened.

    2. Next, instead of turning off the power to the drives i just pulled out the cable at the back of the Mac. The computer did not turn off this time. If all else fails I can do this but it seems there must be something in the new OS X that it doesn't like.

I shall report back where I have gone through your suggestion.

    Regards

    Chris
